As part of the wider Kaipara Kickstart Programme, LDE, in partnership with STF Group, proudly undertook the design and construction of the new $29 million Pōuto Wharf. This project presented unique challenges due to Pōuto's remote location, about an hour from Dargaville, and its reputation as one of Northland's most challenging harbour environments.
The 60m long timber Wharf officially opened on June 7th, with a ceremony attended by project members, local officials, Iwi, and community representatives. The event began at the Marae, honouring ancestors and traditions, followed by ribbon-cutting, a blessing and speeches at the wharf. The celebration concluded with refreshments back at the Marae.
A project years in the making, began in 2002, the completion of the Pōuto Wharf is a significant achievement for Kaipara. With this structure in place, enhancing community connections to Auckland is a real possibility, ending more than sixty years without a local wharf for the settlement.
This project exemplifies the positive impact of the Kaipara Kickstart Programme through innovative design and strategic collaboration.
