Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix Projects

Project Overview

The Australian Grand Prix is an annual Formula 1 motor racing event held at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit. It is one of the oldest motorsport competitions held in Australia.

Since 2019, iEDM have acted as engineering project managers for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.

Engaged by iEDM, WGA act as the structural superintendent for the site, providing engineering advice and certification of infrastructure to assist in delivering a safe event.

WGA also delivered structural and geotechnical engineering for a new six-lane pedestrian overpass to reduce entry and exit times for attendees.

In 2020, WGA provided structural designs for modifications to key circuit infrastructure for the Formula 1, including:

• The Starters Light Gantry.

• The Turn 14.5 over-track sign.

• Conducted condition assessment on all AGPC owned assets and assumed design responsibility.

These temporary structures were designed to accommodate wind loads and maximise efficiency during construction and dismantling. The team delivered superintendency services, coordinating multiple engineers to maintain consistent engineering standards across temporary structures.

WGA also conducted geotechnical site investigations to confirm the dimensions of an existing in-ground footing for a repeater light and assess the underlying soil bearing pressure.

In 2026, our team contributed to a major upgrade to improve crowd movement and event experience which included structural and geotechnical engineering for the new six-lane overpass.

The new overpass was approximately three times larger than earlier designs and had the capacity to reduce entry and exit times by 20 minutes, a major improvement for the close to half a million attendees.

WGA worked closely with iEDM to support the safe and efficient delivery of temporary infrastructure for the Australian Grand Prix. The team helped maintain consistent engineering standards across the site while meeting the tight program requirements.
