Our experience

Our hydrogeology specialists bring established field methodology together with modern modelling tools to answer water resource questions at a catchment and project scale. We work on stream-aquifer interaction, recharge quantification, aquifer characterisation and groundwater modelling, and we use GIS and database platforms to manage and present data in ways that consenting authorities and asset owners can use.

Managed aquifer recharge

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) and aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) are areas we have invested in heavily over the last fifteen to twenty years, and we have contributed to a large number of major MAR developments across our project portfolio. That depth of experience carries through into how we scope feasibility, monitoring and consenting work today.

Groundwater experience

Our groundwater work covers a broad technical range, from numerical modelling of aquifers through to the testing of individual wells for consent applications. We support government, private and industry clients through the increasingly complex task of managing groundwater resources under climate and allocation pressures, and we ground our advice in field data rather than desktop assumption.

Consenting and hearings

A large share of our groundwater work is consenting-related, and we are regularly engaged to provide expert evidence for resource consent hearings. Our hydrogeologists present technical findings clearly and defensibly, whether the forum is a council hearing, an Environment Court appeal or a collaborative planning process.

Managed Aquifer Recharge experience

Over the past thirty years our water team has consented and installed more than 75 groundwater replenishment schemes using managed aquifer recharge (MAR) internationally, and we carry that depth of experience directly into our New Zealand work. We treat MAR as a practical tool for responding to climate-driven pressure on groundwater, rather than as an experimental technology.

Why managed aquifer recharge matters

Replenishing groundwater storage is one of the clearest practical tools available for responding to climate change impacts on water resources. MAR lets regions use surplus flow when it is available to rebuild aquifer storage for use when it isn't, and done well it also supports stream base flows and dependent ecosystems.

Which groundwater projects have you worked on in New Zealand?

Published work includes the Tāpora Flats groundwater model in Auckland, groundwater management for the Poverty Bay Flats in Tairāwhiti, the Ōmokaroa geothermal take and discharge in the Bay of Plenty, the Tauhei quarry hydrogeological assessment in Waikato, water permits for kiwifruit orchards, and the Hinds and Hekeao groundwater replenishment programme in Canterbury.
