Experience

Our experience

We work across the full range of sports and recreation projects, from local club upgrades through to significant recreational facilities and stadia. Depending on the project we lead the civil scope ourselves or sit inside a larger consultant team alongside architects and specialist designers. Many of our clients are councils and community organisations, so we are used to managing delivery against tight budgets and fixed funding windows.

Fields, courts and surfaces

A large share of our work involves new or upgraded playing surfaces and the supporting civil works. We handle drainage, earthworks, irrigation and stormwater alongside the surface specification itself.

New sports fields and ground upgrades for rugby, football, cricket, hockey and others

Multi-sport courts for netball, tennis, basketball and lawn bowls

Sports lighting upgrades and new installations

Drainage and stormwater management

Irrigation and playing-surface specifications

Facilities and stadia

Beyond the playing surface we also design the buildings and supporting infrastructure that sit around it. That includes club rooms, grandstands, aquatic centres and larger stadia, plus recreational paths and skate parks at community scale.

Club rooms, grandstands and leisure centres

Aquatic centres and pools

Boardwalks, cycling and recreational paths

Skate parks, BMX tracks and motor sport facilities

Equestrian facilities

Events infrastructure and temporary works

What this work involves

Sports and recreation projects are civil engineering with an unusually specific performance brief and an unusually fixed budget. A playing surface either drains within the window the code requires or it does not, and the funding round that paid for it does not come back.

We work across playing surfaces and the supporting civil works, and across the buildings and structures around them. That covers new and upgraded fields for rugby, football, cricket and hockey, multi-sport and hard courts, sports lighting, drainage, earthworks, irrigation and stormwater, and then club rooms, grandstands, aquatic centres and larger facilities, along with boardwalks, paths, skate parks and events infrastructure.

How we approach it

Most of our clients here are councils, clubs and community organisations working to a grant with an expiry date, and the design that matters is the one that can be built for the money that exists. We front-load the cost certainty, tell clients early where a specification is driving the price, and stage designs so that a facility can be delivered in usable increments rather than waiting for a full funding package. Where volunteers will maintain the asset, we design for that rather than for a groundskeeping team that is not coming.
