Natural Hazards Management

Natural hazards influence where and how land can be developed safely, and understanding them early is central to sound planning, design and consenting. LDE's natural hazards management service helps landowners, developers, councils and infrastructure providers identify, assess and manage the hazards that affect a site, including flooding, coastal processes, seismic and ground shaking effects, land instability and other geotechnical hazards.

We bring together engineering, environmental and planning expertise to characterise the hazards present, assess the level of risk they pose to people, property and infrastructure, and advise on practical measures to avoid, reduce or manage that risk. Our work supports feasibility studies, resource consent applications, subdivision and infrastructure design, and long-term asset planning, and follows relevant New Zealand standards and guidance. By setting out the hazards clearly and the options for managing them, we give clients a sound basis for decisions that protect communities and support resilient, well-considered development.
