Beach Road Coastal Protection Works

LDE has been engaged by Gisborne District Council (GDC) since 2025 to deliver a comprehensive coastal protection programme along Beach Road in Tokomaru Bay, a beachside community on the remote East Coast. Kapuārangi Takutai Moana Trust has been integral as mana whenua partners. The project scope has evolved from an initial emergency works response into a long-term global design strategy, with LDE providing optioneering, design of hybrid shore protection structures, tender documentation, NZS3910 contract management, and MSQA services.

LDE’s integrated design and quality assurance role has enabled GDC to prioritise works against available funding while maintaining confidence in both technical outcomes and construction quality. Ecological constraints, including protection of korōrā (little penguin) habitat, have been carefully managed throughout in coordination with ecological specialists EcoWorks and the contractor, Parata Limited.
