Lathams Road Upgrade Bridge - Level 2 Inspections

As part of the Lathams Road Upgrade, delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria, WGA conducted Level 2 Inspection Services of the road bridge structure and three major reinforced concrete culverts in accordance with DTP’s Road Structures Inspection Manual (RSIM) – 2022.

A challenge presented itself with high water levels inside the culverts, deeming physical access not possible, even with waders, due to clearance under half a metre. To overcome this, the WGA team built a custom remote-controlled inspection boat, equipped with a mounted GoPro for internal footage, torch for visibility, and ropes tied to the boat to retrieve it safely if it became stuck in debris.

This approach allowed for a clear and thorough visual inspection of the internal culvert components above the waterline, without risking personnel safety. The solution resulted in clear footage and a safe, efficient inspection process, demonstrating adaptability and innovation on site.
