Henley Square Redevelopment

The City of Charles Sturt commissioned an $8.4m upgrade of the Henley Square precinct. The Award-winning urban design promotes engagement between the foreshore, ‘the big lawn’ and the pedestrianised square.

WGA was an integral part of the design team for the detailed design of the square upgrade, providing input into both the civil and structural disciplines. WGA was also instrumental in the conceptual and detailed design of all the adjacent car parks and intersections, including the new Department for Infrastructure and Transport Seaview Road scramble crossing.

From a civil perspective, the Henley Square redevelopment posed some complex issues, in particular with the grading of the Square itself. Combining the brief of ‘consistent DDA compliant grades from Seaview Road to the Edge Structure’ with the numerous different interfaces to the existing businesses posed some major challenges. Through the use of strategically placed steps and tweaking of small area of grading, the goal was achieved. DDA access was provided throughout all areas, all existing businesses now have individual dining spaces adjacent their entrances, and the grade from Seaview through to Edge structure barely changes. A DDA compliant shared path has also been provided along the coastline, from the Southern extent of the site to the Northern extent (approximately 300m).
