Twenty Third Street Distillery

Project Overview

After acquiring the former Renmano winery site in Renmark, Bickford’s Group looked to rejuvenate the site to establish a new distillery and central storage facility for its Australian operation. The goal was to pay homage to the historically rich site, originally built in 1914, and reintroduce it as a welcoming destination.

Working alongside architects Walter Brooke & Associates, WGA provided civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering services to support the adaptive reuse of the site.

The redevelopment breathed new life into the century-old grounds, transforming them into the Twenty Third Street Distillery.

WGA’s scope included engineering design to enable economical staging of construction, refurbishment of the central distillery building and still tower, and development of a comprehensive civil drainage master plan.

Structural works supported the installation of new distillation equipment, elevated walkways, and a mezzanine-level control room and laboratory.

The distillery features a tasting room located behind the original façade, a new roof constructed using recycled timber modelled on historic trusses, and landscaped lawns with an internal courtyard.

Our early site investigations provided the necessary insight into the existing building structure and capacity, ensuring refurbishment works could be delivered safely and efficiently while preserving heritage elements.

Completed in August 2016, the project successfully balances heritage preservation with industrial use, delivering a functional facility that honours the site’s past while securing its future as a centrepiece of South Australia’s spirits industry.
