Central Auckland buried most of its streams generations ago, and the city is now rediscovering the value of the ones that remain. Across the isthmus, urban streams run in concrete channels and culverts, many waterways are piped, and the few remaining open reaches and wetlands carry real ecological and amenity value. LDE works on the surface-water side of this, covering river and stream hydraulics, flood and erosion management, stream daylighting and channel naturalisation, wetland design and restoration, fish passage and freshwater consenting.
We model how intensifying catchments change flows, design works that lower flood risk and improve degraded urban streams, and reopen and restore watercourses where space and development allow. Because Auckland Council is a unitary authority, this work is consented under the Auckland Unitary Plan and the national freshwater rules together. What is stream daylighting and is it feasible in the CBD?
Daylighting reopens a piped or culverted stream into an open, naturalised channel. It is not feasible everywhere in a dense city, but where redevelopment frees up a corridor it can lower flood risk, improve habitat and water quality, and create amenity. We assess the hydraulics, the space and the consenting to work out where it stacks up.

How is fish passage handled where streams are piped?
Culverts, pipes and weirs often block fish that need to move up and down a stream, so we assess passage through the urban network and design remediation such as baffles, ramps or replacement structures. On the isthmus this is a common requirement under the freshwater rules, and it can be built into culvert renewals and redevelopment works.
